Israel Launches Strike Against Iran in Retaliation for Weekend Attack

According to a report by ABC News on Thursday night (early Friday morning, UAE time), Israel has initiated a strike against Iran in retaliation for the weekend attack. Citing a senior US official, the report underscores escalating tensions between the two nations following Iran’s barrage of missiles and drones targeting Israel over the weekend. Although most of these projectiles were intercepted, Israel had previously issued warnings of retaliation.

The situation intensified early Friday morning as Iran fired air defense batteries amid reported explosions near a major airbase in the city of Isfahan, as per the state-run Irna news agency. While it remained unclear if the country was under attack, tensions persisted in the aftermath of Iran’s unprecedented missile-and-drone assault on Israel. Speculation arose suggesting that the explosions may have resulted from drone strikes, with one government official hinting at potential targeted sites.

The Israeli military refrained from immediate comment in response to these developments.

Irna reported that air defense systems were activated across several provinces, including Isfahan. However, the agency did not provide further details regarding the circumstances prompting the activation. Residents across the affected areas reported hearing the sounds of defense systems being engaged.

In particular, Irna highlighted the firing of air defenses at a major airbase in Isfahan, historically known as the home to Iran’s fleet of American-made F-14 Tomcats, acquired prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The events unfolding underscore the heightened tensions in the region, with both Israel and Iran remaining on high alert amid the escalating conflict.
