Following the significant vehicle damage inflicted by record-breaking rainfall on April 16 in the UAE, automobile experts are providing essential advice to motorists on mitigating risks and safeguarding their vehicles as inclement weather conditions are forecasted for May 2.

Sony Rajappan, an automobile expert at Car Lynx, underscores the importance of avoiding unnecessary travel. However, if driving is unavoidable, Rajappan advises drivers to stop their vehicles upon encountering water puddles and seek alternative routes if possible. Should driving through water become necessary, he cautions against allowing the water level to exceed the car’s running board.

Assessing the depth of water before proceeding is crucial, Rajappan notes, suggesting that drivers observe the tires of vehicles ahead for guidance. It’s also recommended to maintain a safe distance of at least 5 meters from the vehicle in front to prevent sudden stops that could result in being stranded in the water.

Joseph, an automobile expert at Falcon Garage, advises against braking while traversing submerged roads, as halting in water can lead to engine damage. He stresses the importance of maintaining a speed of 10 to 15 km per hour to prevent water ingress into the engine.

To determine if water levels are safe, Rajappan suggests parking aside and physically assessing the water level by walking on the road. This method ensures an accurate understanding of the depth and elevation of the area.

Aquaplaning, a significant concern during heavy rainfall, occurs when water builds up between tires and the road surface, causing loss of traction and control. Rajappan advises drivers to employ proper braking techniques, applying and releasing brakes intermittently to avoid skidding or sliding uncontrollably.

Experts recommend maintaining speeds below 80 km per hour, especially on roads designated for higher speeds, during adverse weather conditions. Slower speeds facilitate better hazard response and vehicle control.

Motorists are cautioned against parking in basements during forecasted inclement weather, as lower levels are susceptible to flooding. Rajappan highlights the vulnerability of modern vehicles’ electronic components to water damage, emphasizing the importance of allowing vehicles to rest for a day or two after exposure to water.

In case of any unusual sounds or suspected damage, drivers are urged to consult experts promptly to address potential issues before they escalate. By following these crucial tips, motorists can navigate safely through challenging weather conditions and protect their vehicles from harm.
