In a significant move towards sustainable transportation infrastructure, ADNOC Group has announced plans to install more than 500 new fast and superfast electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the UAE in the coming years. Revealed by Mohamed Khamlichi, Vice President of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure & H2 at ADNOC Distribution, this initiative aims to enhance the accessibility of EV charging facilities at over 45 strategic locations, including key highways and EV super-hubs, ultimately improving the customer experience.
The announcement was made at the Mobility Live exhibition in Abu Dhabi, a platform showcasing the future of mobility and convening technology disruptors and stakeholders from around the world. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA), emphasized the urgency of sustainable transport solutions in her keynote speech, highlighting the evolution of EV adoption over the past two decades.
Recognizing the challenges in accelerating EV adoption, experts discussed the need for financial incentives and infrastructure development during a panel discussion. Soundouss Bouhia, Director of Finance and Policy at UICCA, emphasized the importance of incentives such as free charging, subsidized rates, and privileges for EV users to achieve the country’s EV targets.
Moreover, as the UAE endeavors to reduce transportation emissions and achieve its net-zero goals by 2050, building more EV infrastructure and expanding charging networks emerge as critical priorities. Dr. Bouhia emphasized the necessity of increasing EV chargers, particularly in real estate communities, to facilitate widespread adoption.
Abu Dhabi, in alignment with its ambitious tourism goals, is spearheading efforts to transform its mobility landscape. Abdulla Al Marzooqi, Director General of the Integrated Transport Centre, outlined plans to enhance public transport coverage and connectivity to landmarks, leveraging innovative solutions such as flying taxis, EVs, and a well-connected rail network. Al Marzooqi underscored the importance of safe and sustainable mobility in enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
As ADNOC Group and other stakeholders in the UAE prioritize sustainable mobility initiatives, the nation moves closer to realizing its vision of a greener and more efficient transportation ecosystem, aligned with global climate objectives.
