In a concerning revelation, Dubai Police reported that over 35,000 drivers were caught using their mobile phones while behind the wheel in the first eight months of 2023. This dangerous practice has had dire consequences, with 99 accidents resulting in the tragic loss of six lives and injuries to 58 others.The Dubai Police have emphasized that using mobile phones while driving leads to dangerous distractions, causing sudden lane changes, running red lights, and even driving below the minimum speed limit on highways due to a lack of focus on the road.

Maj-Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the General Department of Traffic at the Dubai Police, warned, “Using a phone while behind the wheel not only diverts a driver’s attention but also significantly increases the likelihood of accidents. A momentary lapse in concentration while checking social media or texting can have devastating consequences.”To curb this perilous behavior, the Dubai Police have implemented strict penalties. Drivers caught using phones on the road will face an Dh800 fine and receive four black points on their license. These penalties apply whether one is making calls, sending text messages, or browsing social media while driving.To enforce these rules effectively, Dubai utilizes smart technologies, including cameras on roads. These high-tech cameras can identify various violations, not limited to distracted driving but also encompassing lane discipline violations, failure to fasten seat belts, and sudden deviations from the proper lane.
