A recent report highlights a concerning trend of e-scooter accidents in Dubai over the past eight months. Authorities have recorded a total of 32 accidents attributed to improper e-scooter use, resulting in five fatalities and 29 injuries. Major-General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the traffic department, has sounded the alarm on this issue and urged e-scooter riders to prioritize safety.
Of the recorded injuries, two were severe, while 14 were categorized as moderate. The situation has prompted law enforcement to take action, with over 10,000 fines issued to e-scooter riders during this eight-month period.

The fines, which amount to Dh300, are imposed on riders who engage in behaviors that endanger their own lives or the lives of others. The police have released a video showcasing some of the most common traffic violations observed among e-scooter riders. These violations include children under the age of 16 operating e-scooters, using e-scooters on main roads, and riding against the flow of traffic, among others.
Major-General Saif Muhair Al Mazroui emphasized the importance of adhering to safety rules and traffic regulations for e-scooter riders. These measures include:
- Respecting Traffic Laws: Riders are urged to follow all relevant traffic regulations.
- Staying on Designated Paths: E-scooters should be used only on designated paths.
- Avoiding High-Speed Roads: E-scooters should be kept away from roads with speeds exceeding 60 km/h.
- Wearing Helmets and Reflective Jackets: Safety gear, including helmets and reflective jackets, is essential.
- Adhering to Traffic Lights and Road Signs: Riders must obey traffic signals and adhere to all road signs.
- Equipping Scooters with Lights: E-scooters should be equipped with bright white and reflective lights at the front and bright red and reflective lights at the back.
- Ensuring Functioning Brakes: It is imperative that e-scooters have properly functioning brakes.
