Abu Dhabi International Airport to be Renamed Zayed International Airport

Official Change Effective February 9, 2024, Coinciding with New Terminal A Opening

In a significant and symbolic move, Abu Dhabi International Airport is set to undergo a name change to honor the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, as announced on Tuesday. The decision to rename the airport to “Zayed International Airport” was made by the President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The official change is scheduled to come into effect from February 9, 2024, coinciding with the official opening ceremony of the new Terminal A, as reported by the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office. The grand opening of Terminal A marks a pivotal moment in the airport’s evolution and enhances its standing as a prominent global aviation hub.

The new Terminal A, a state-of-the-art facility, is poised to begin its operational phase on November 1. This initial period will serve as a transition period for airlines, during which all terminals, including A, 1, 2, and 3, will operate simultaneously. However, from November 15, all airlines will exclusively operate from the newly minted Terminal A.

Terminal A, covering an impressive 742,000 square meters, boasts an annual passenger capacity of up to 45 million. Once fully operational, it will be home to 28 airlines serving a network of 117 destinations worldwide. This marks a significant enhancement of Abu Dhabi International Airport’s infrastructure and capabilities, reflecting its pivotal role in the region’s aviation industry.

The decision to rename the airport after the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the United Arab Emirates and a visionary leader, underscores his enduring legacy and the profound impact he had on the nation. The new name, “Zayed International Airport,” pays tribute to his memory and the values he stood for, serving as a testament to his significant contributions to the development and progress of the UAE.
