Abu Dhabi Cyclists Hit with Fines for Obscuring License Plates with Bikes

Stricter regulations on bike carriers lead to surprise fines for unaware cyclists

In recent weeks, Abu Dhabi cyclists are learning that the thrill of hitting the tracks comes with a caveat—strict regulations on transporting bikes via car. Ignorance of these rules has left some enthusiasts with unexpected fines and a lesson in compliance.

One such resident, JO, a cycling enthusiast, had to fork out Dh400 for obscuring his vehicle’s license plate with his bicycle mounted on the back of his car. The Abu Dhabi Police have implemented a new initiative urging drivers to affix an additional number plate to the base of their bicycle carriers to ensure clear visibility of the original license plate. Failure to comply results in a traffic violation fine.

The initiative has sparked a mix of reactions among the cycling community. G Sahany, an Indian expat, and his 6-year-old son, who registered for the upcoming Dubai Ride, were taken by surprise when they realized that attaching a bike rack could lead to fines. Sahany expressed concern, stating, “I didn’t know it was a violation, but the initiative by the authorities provides more clarity.”

Dubai resident Mohtashim Rizvi, a frequent cyclist to Mushrif Park, is taking proactive steps to avoid fines. He plans to request an additional number plate through the Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA) to comply with the regulations. The application process, costing Dh35, can be completed online and promises a quick turnaround, with Rizvi mentioning it takes only “three minutes” to apply.

Abu Dhabi Police, committed to intensifying traffic enforcement, emphasize legal action against vehicles not adhering to license plate display requirements as per the Federal Traffic and Traffic Act. Residents in Abu Dhabi can obtain an additional number plate for their cycle rack by visiting any Abu Dhabi Police station service center, undergoing a technical examination, paying the prescribed fee, and receiving the plate.
