he Abu Dhabi government is set to implement a heat alert in 2024 in response to unprecedented heat waves experienced in the UAE over the past couple of years. Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi (EAD), revealed the initiative as part of the capital’s comprehensive Climate Change Strategy discussed at COP 28 on Wednesday.
Dr. Al Dhaheri emphasized the global impact of climate change, stating, “We all have to work together to address climate change. Here in the UAE and specifically in Abu Dhabi, we are at the receiving end of the global impact. Many of us have noticed the unforeseen heat waves and sandstorms more than ever before in the last two years.”
Highlighting the long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship in the UAE, Dr. Al Dhaheri mentioned the nation’s initiatives to tackle climate change, desertification, and blue carbon. The Abu Dhabi government aims to achieve a 22% reduction in carbon emissions by 2027, equivalent to the sequestration by 500 million trees over a decade, aligning with the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.
Matar Saeed Al Nuaimi, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), revealed the forthcoming launch of a heat alert in 2024. Al Nuaimi stated, “By creating procedures, we can create action plans to mitigate the impact of environmental factors on human beings.” The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance critical sectors such as infrastructure, energy, environment, and health, ensuring both business continuity and climate resilience.
Awaidha Murshed Ali Al Marar, Chairman of the Department of Energy, stressed the importance of individual contributions to reducing carbon emissions. He outlined policies aimed at securing the supply of vital resources like water and electricity while maintaining affordability and prioritizing environmental friendliness.

Saeed Al Bahri Salem Al Ameri, Director General of Abu Dhabi Agriculture & Food Safety Authority, discussed agricultural strategies aligned with scientific approaches. Al Ameri highlighted the agricultural genomics program, focusing on breeding resilient plants and animals capable of thriving in challenging conditions while optimizing resource usage.
In embracing precision agriculture and post-harvest technologies, Abu Dhabi aims to reduce waste and ensure sustainable food production amid the harsh climate. These initiatives underscore the capital’s commitment to addressing climate change and building resilience across various sectors.
