The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued a weather advisory indicating heavy rain and lightning expected to hit the UAE next week. After a week of pleasant weather characterized by overcast skies and cool temperatures, residents should prepare for significant changes in the weather pattern.

According to the NCM, from Sunday to Tuesday, an upper air depression will gradually deepen, leading to increased cloudiness in scattered areas across the country. These clouds are likely to trigger convective activity, resulting in rainfall of varying intensity, lightning, thunder, and possibly hail in some regions.

In addition to the precipitation, temperatures are forecasted to decrease as wind patterns shift from southeasterly to northeasterly. Wind speeds are expected to range from fresh to strong, reaching up to 45 km/hr at times, particularly in areas experiencing cloudy conditions. Sea conditions are also expected to be rough to very rough in the Arabian Gulf and rough in the Oman Sea, especially during cloudy periods.

The weather disturbances are attributed to a surface low-pressure system in the Southwest, coupled with humid southeasterly winds. Additionally, an upper air depression with a cold air mass and a westerly trough will contribute to varying cloud cover from the west.

Recent temperature recordings indicate a significant drop in temperature, with Jebel Jais Mountains recording near-freezing temperatures at 3.4°C on Sunday. This follows a chilly 4.2ºC recorded at 5 am on Saturday at Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah.

Renowned astronomer Ibrahim Al-Jarwan predicts an increase in rainfall throughout February, marking the onset of the ‘Scorpion Season’. This period, lasting 40 days from February 6 to March 17, is characterized by abundant rain and fluctuating winds between Northwest and Northeast directions.

During the early stages of the Scorpion Season, northern regions of the Arabian Peninsula may experience winter freeze, particularly notable during the first and second weeks of February. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions during this period of anticipated weather variability.
