How NRIs in UAE Can Obtain Aadhaar Card: Step-by-Step Guide

For Indian expatriates residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who wish to obtain an Aadhaar card, the process is straightforward provided they have the necessary documentation in order. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how NRIs can acquire an Aadhaar card, which serves as a centralised identity proof in India.

1. Understanding Aadhaar: Aadhaar is a unique 12-digit identification number linked to biometric data, serving as proof of identity, age, and address in India. While NRIs are not obligated to obtain Aadhaar, having one can facilitate various transactions in India, such as opening bank accounts, renting properties, and government processes.

2. ‘Aadhaar on Arrival’ Provision: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers an ‘Aadhaar on Arrival’ provision for NRIs. Although NRIs can apply for Aadhaar, it is not mandatory unless they plan to return to India or stay for an extended period.

3. Types of Aadhaar Forms: Different forms are available for various age groups and residential statuses:

  • Form 1: For individuals aged 18 and above.
  • Form 2: For NRIs enrolling or updating with an address outside India.
  • Form 3: For children aged 5 to under 18 years, with or without an Indian address proof.
  • Form 4: For NRI children in the same age group without an Indian address proof.

4. Booking an Appointment: NRIs can book Aadhaar appointments online or offline:

  • Online: Visit the UIDAI website, select your location, provide an Indian mobile number, and book an appointment slot.
  • Offline: Visit an Aadhaar center and schedule a biometric appointment.

5. Document Submission: Submit all necessary documents in person at the UIDAI enrollment center, including:

  • Valid Indian passport as proof of identity and address.
  • Proof of address documents approved by UIDAI, such as PAN card or utility bills.
  • Other residency status evidence, like a stamped visa copy of the country of residence.

6. Biometric Data Collection: Visit the UIDAI enrollment center to provide biometric details, including scans of all ten fingers, irises of both eyes, and a photograph.

7. Card Delivery: Your Aadhaar card will be dispatched to your registered address in India within 90 days.

Mandatory Documents Required for NRI Aadhaar Card:

  • Valid Indian passport.
  • Proof of address documents (if no Indian address proof, alternate UIDAI-approved documents).
  • Birth certificate for individuals born after October 1, 2023.
  • For NRI children, a valid Indian passport serves as both proof of identity and address.

By following these steps and providing the necessary documents, NRIs in the UAE can obtain an Aadhaar card, facilitating their interactions and transactions in India.
