Last week’s torrential rainstorm proved to be a historic challenge for Dubai International (DXB) airport, with approximately 2,155 flights cancelled, marking the highest number of cancellations in the airport’s 63-year history. Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, described the event as the “most disruptive weather event” ever encountered by the airport.

DXB, renowned as the world’s busiest international airport, faced unprecedented disruption as a year’s worth of rainfall inundated Dubai within a mere 24 hours on April 16. Normal operations resumed on Saturday, April 20, following extensive efforts to mitigate the impact of the storm.

Griffiths emphasized the scale of the disruption, highlighting the exceptional nature of the rainfall, which surpassed UAE’s previous records. Despite early awareness of the impending storm, emergency response protocols were activated, and resources were mobilized to ensure the safety of passengers and staff.

The CEO recounted the initial apprehension upon observing the storm’s intensity on radar, expressing relief that despite the cataclysmic nature of the event, DXB remained operational throughout the ordeal. He underscored the distinction between this weather-related disruption and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, noting that despite the storm, airports remained open, contrasting with the temporary suspension of flights during the pandemic’s early stages.

In response to the storm, DXB temporarily suspended operations, swiftly adapting flight schedules to facilitate safe departures and assist stranded passengers in reaching their destinations. Over 75,000 food packets were distributed to passengers, despite logistical hurdles posed by road closures around the airports.

Griffiths addressed concerns regarding visa issues faced by some residents and visitors affected by flight cancellations, assuring that DXB collaborated with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners’ Affairs (GDRFA) to provide guidance and support to those affected.

Despite the challenges posed by the storm, DXB’s resilience remains evident, with the airport maintaining its status as the world’s top airport for international passenger numbers for the 10th consecutive year in 2023. Anticipating continued growth, DXB is poised to surpass previous traffic levels in 2024, reflecting its enduring importance as a global aviation hub.
