58-Year-Old Mike Tyson to Return to the Ring Against YouTuber Jake Paul Amid Widespread Backlash

Nearly four decades after making his professional debut, Mike Tyson is returning to the boxing ring for an eight-round fight against YouTuber Jake Paul, 27, in Arlington, Texas. The much-anticipated bout, scheduled for Friday at AT&T Stadium, has sparked significant controversy across the boxing community, with many expressing concern over Tyson’s health and safety.

Now 58, Tyson last fought professionally in 2005, stepping away from the sport after a technical knockout loss to Kevin McBride. His return, backed by Netflix, has drawn mixed reactions, with critics denouncing it as a “macabre circus act” and calling it an unnecessary risk given Tyson’s age and recent health issues. Earlier this year, Tyson had a medical scare, reportedly suffering from a bleeding ulcer while on a flight.

Prominent boxing figures have voiced strong disapproval. British promoter Eddie Hearn stated, “If anyone thinks that Mike Tyson should be in a ring at this age, you either have absolutely no emotional feelings toward the man, or you’re an idiot.” Rival promoter Frank Warren echoed these sentiments, describing the match as “ridiculous.”

Despite the backlash, Tyson remains undeterred. Dismissing critics as “jealous,” he maintains that his rigorous training has reignited his fighting spirit. “The fight is the party. All the hard work is done,” he said confidently at an open workout in Texas this week. He added that he is “ready to fight” and prepared for the upcoming challenge.

In contrast, Paul, a social media star who has transitioned into boxing, has been vocal about his confidence, declaring, “It’s going to be a short night for Mike.” Paul, who has 10 wins out of 11 fights, has faced a mix of opponents, including athletes from other sports.

For UAE residents, the fight will stream live on Netflix on November 16 at 5 a.m. local time, attracting a worldwide audience expected to reach millions. Tyson’s return has left many wondering if the former heavyweight champion still possesses the power that made him a legend. However, veteran promoter Bob Arum was clear in his skepticism, stating, “A 58-year-old guy…is not gonna be able to fight…I hope Mike doesn’t get hurt, but I really give him relatively no chance.”

With thousands expected to watch live in Texas and millions more globally, Tyson’s comeback may be the most controversial yet, highlighting the debate between spectacle and safety in modern boxing.
