The Abu Dhabi Transport Authority has launched a new awareness campaign titled ‘Giving Way to Emergency Vehicles’ to encourage motorists to yield to ambulances, police cars, and other emergency vehicles on the roads. The initiative aims to ensure that emergency responders can reach accident sites and critical situations swiftly, ultimately saving lives and protecting property.

Under UAE traffic laws, failing to give way to emergency vehicles carries severe penalties. Motorists who do not yield to ambulances, police, or civil defense vehicles face a fine of Dh3,000, six traffic points, and a 30-day vehicle confiscation. Additionally, drivers who obstruct authorities during emergencies, disasters, or adverse weather conditions, such as floods, will be fined Dh1,000, receive four black points, and have their vehicles impounded for 60 days.

The campaign also highlights the importance of ensuring clear access for emergency vehicles in residential and commercial areas. The Abu Dhabi Civil Defence has reiterated its warning to warehouse owners about obstructing entrances or failing to leave sufficient space for emergency vehicles to maneuver. Under Resolution No. 24 of 2012, such violations can result in a hefty penalty of Dh50,000.

The awareness drive will utilize various media channels, field events, and educational lectures to target drivers and different segments of society. The initiative seeks to clarify traffic laws related to yielding to emergency vehicles and the consequences of obstructing their movement. By doing so, the authority aims to enhance road safety and ensure that emergency services can operate efficiently.

This campaign underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to public safety and its efforts to foster a culture of responsibility and awareness among motorists. The Transport Authority hopes that the initiative will lead to improved compliance with traffic regulations, ultimately contributing to safer roads and faster emergency response times across the emirate.
