Indian Higher Education Institutions Extend Reach to UAE, Boosting Academic and Cultural Ties

Prestigious Indian institutions, including IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi, are expanding into the UAE, offering diverse educational opportunities.

The United Arab Emirates is increasingly becoming a destination for Indian students pursuing higher education, offering a diverse range of career opportunities. Several Indian higher education institutions have already established their presence in the UAE, enhancing the academic landscape and fostering cultural ties between the two nations.

Notable Indian institutions in the UAE include BITS Pilani-Dubai, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Amity University-Dubai, and SP Jain School of Global Management – Dubai. These institutions contribute to the UAE’s growing status as an education hub in the region.

Here is what we know about the prestigious higher education institutions in India that are coming to the UAE in the foreseeable future:

IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi Campus:

  • Location: The inaugural international campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the UAE, known as IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi, will establish its interim campus at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi.
  • Start Date: Academic operations at IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi are set to commence in January 2024, beginning with the Master’s program in Energy Transition and Sustainability.
  • Courses Offered: The first program offered by IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi will focus on Energy Transition and Sustainability, aligning with the sustainability goals set for future generations, as envisioned by COP28, the UN Climate Change Conference scheduled in Dubai later this month.

Student Exchange Programs: Facilitating academic collaboration between higher education institutions in both India and the UAE for offering Twinning, Joint Degree, and Dual Degree Programs is actively under consideration. This means that students from IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi may have opportunities to study at the main IIT Delhi campus and vice versa, fostering mutual benefits.

Initiation: India and the UAE signed an agreement to establish a campus of IIT-Delhi in Abu Dhabi during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Abu Dhabi in July 2023. Recent discussions between India’s Minister of Education, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship, Dharmendra Pradhan, and UAE’s Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Education and Human Resources Council (EHRC), reviewed the progress on the IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi campus.

IIM Campus in UAE: The establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) campus in the UAE is under consideration, marking the potential expansion of IIMs beyond India. Speculations suggest that IIM Ahmedabad may be the first to establish a campus in the UAE.

More Indian Universities: It is expected that more Indian universities will set up campuses in the UAE soon. Symbiosis International Educational Centre is among those exploring the possibility of opening a campus in Dubai. The collaboration between India and the UAE includes the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in education, envisioning collaboration in the field of Capacity Development of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) teaching staff.

These initiatives not only enhance the academic landscape in the UAE but also strengthen the cultural ties between India and the Emirates, offering a wide range of educational opportunities for students from both countries. The growing presence of Indian institutions in the UAE signifies the increasing importance of the region as a hub for higher education and academic collaboration.
