In a departure from previous years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is witnessing a milder winter this season, as reported by meteorological experts from the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). December’s average temperatures have been notably higher than historical averages, with a forecast indicating that January will see daytime temperatures around 24ºC, dropping to 15ºC in the evenings. Certain mountainous regions may experience even lower temperatures. Dr. Ahmed Habib from the NCM highlighted that both December and January have demonstrated increased overall temperatures and decreased rainfall compared to previous years during the same period.

Dr. Habib explained that the deviation from the usual temperature patterns is influenced by the expansion of a high-pressure system ridge over Siberia, introducing a cold air mass that affects the UAE and the Arabian Peninsula. Additionally, low-pressure systems passing from West to East and the extension of the red sea trough at times contribute to varying weather conditions. While these conditions may lead to cloud developments and occasional rainfall, December 2023 experienced lower-than-average rainfall compared to previous years.

The NCM expert emphasized that ongoing cloud-seeding operations in the UAE have been active in 2024. Recent cloud cover in the northern region, accompanied by sporadic light rain, prompted cloud-seeding operations over areas including Hatta, specific regions north of Al Ain, and parts of Fujairah. Despite a milder winter, the UAE continues to employ cloud-seeding efforts to enhance rainfall and weather conditions.

The UAE’s meteorological observations indicate a deviation from historical winter patterns, with higher temperatures and reduced rainfall during December and January. Ongoing cloud-seeding operations demonstrate the country’s proactive approach to managing weather conditions and optimizing rainfall for agricultural and water resource purposes.
