Tragic news emerged from central Indonesia as landslides and flooding wreaked havoc, claiming the lives of at least 15 people and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The disaster struck Luwu regency in South Sulawesi on Friday, shortly after 1:00 am local time, according to Abdul Muhari, spokesperson of Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency (BNPB).

“A total of 14 residents died due to floods and landslides in Luwu regency, South Sulawesi province,” Muhari reported.

Indonesia, particularly vulnerable to landslides during the rainy season, faces exacerbated risks in some regions due to deforestation. Persistent torrential rains often lead to widespread flooding, exacerbating the impact of natural disasters.

The aftermath of the disaster revealed a grim scene: more than 100 houses were severely damaged, with 42 swept away entirely. Additionally, four roads and one bridge suffered significant damage, impeding access and rescue efforts. Over 100 people found refuge in mosques or with relatives, while authorities scrambled to evacuate over 1,300 affected families from the area.

Tragically, the disaster extended beyond Luwu regency, as another area in South Sulawesi province experienced floods that claimed at least one life and injured two others.

This catastrophe adds to a series of recent extreme weather events in Indonesia. In March, flash floods and landslides on Sumatra island resulted in the loss of at least 30 lives, with scores still missing. Similarly, in December, a landslide and flooding near Lake Toba on Sumatra claimed at least two lives, destroying numerous houses and a hotel.

These incidents underscore the grave consequences of climate change, which experts suggest contribute to the increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events during Indonesia’s rainy season. As the nation grapples with these challenges, concerted efforts are needed to mitigate risks, enhance disaster preparedness, and protect vulnerable communities from future calamities.
