As the pleasant cool weather begins to settle in, outdoor seating areas are starting to sprout outside restaurants and cafes. However, restaurant and cafe owners in Abu Dhabi are reminded that there are rules in place that govern these al fresco arrangements. To ensure that commercial establishments, including shops, eateries, cafes, and other service venues, comply with these regulations, permits are required for setting up temporary outdoor seating areas. The Abu Dhabi City Municipality recently initiated a campaign to educate the public about these rules and the need for compliance. Business owners should be aware of the following guidelines and requirements:

  1. Permit Application: Business owners must submit permit requests through the TAMM platform, provided they have the consent of the building owner and a valid lease agreement of at least six months.
  2. Evaluation of Seating Dimensions: The City Municipality Centre will assess the proposed outdoor seating dimensions and determine the relevant fees based on the required space. This fee includes a refundable deposit of Dh10,000.
  3. Permit Validity: Permits for outdoor seating are issued for a period of one year, with the option for renewal.
  4. Right to Revoke Permits: The municipality retains the right to revoke a permit if the terms are violated or if urban development necessitates it. In such cases, the municipality will not be liable for any potential losses incurred by the permit holder.
  5. Layout Plan: Business owners must submit a detailed layout plan specifying the arrangement of tables, chairs, and shading devices in compliance with established guidelines.
  6. Penalties: The establishment of an outdoor seating area without proper authorization incurs a fine of Dh5,000. Violation of permit conditions can result in a penalty of Dh3,000.

The Abu Dhabi City Municipality, in collaboration with the City Municipality Centre, is actively promoting a campaign aimed at enhancing public awareness and understanding of these regulations governing temporary outdoor seating areas.
