Tourists Brutally Attacked at Indian Hill Station; Ramakkalmedu Homestay Over Electricity Dispute

Kerala, India: In a shocking incident, a family of tourists from Kalamassery, led by photographer and film cameraman Hussain Abdul Shukkur, were brutally attacked by the owner of a homestay and his accomplices at Ramakkalmedu in Idukki district. The clash reportedly occurred following a dispute over repeated power outages at the Mountain Mist homestay where the family was staying.

The victims, including Hussain Abdul Shukkur (38), Seenath (52), Shihab Hamza (39), Shifa (14), Seenath (56), and Saifunees (60), are currently undergoing treatment at Kalamassery Medical College Hospital for injuries sustained during the attack.

The Incident

The group of 60 tourists, including women and children, had arrived from Kalamassery in two vehicles and checked into the Mountain Mist homestay on Wednesday evening. The family alleges that repeated electricity failures during the night, despite being reported and initially resolved by the resort owner, led to a heated dispute.

The situation escalated when the resort owner allegedly assaulted one of the tourists. When the others intervened, the owner reportedly left the scene, only to return later with a group of about 12 individuals who attacked the family. The victims claim that women and children were also targeted during the assault.

Hussain Abdul Shukkur sustained a deep head injury requiring five stitches, while others suffered multiple injuries to their heads and bodies. The attackers allegedly ransacked the rooms, destroying personal belongings and equipment.

Police Inaction Alleged

The injured tourists called the police, who arrived at the scene but allegedly did not take any action against the attackers. The family was forced to pay Rs. 18,000 in compensation before being allowed to leave the homestay.

Medical Treatment and Complaints

On their way back to Kalamassery, the family sought preliminary treatment at a private hospital in Thodupuzha. The seriously injured were later shifted to Kalamassery Government Medical College Hospital, while others were discharged after receiving first aid.

Complaints regarding the incident have been filed at both Thodupuzha and Kalamassery police stations. The family has urged authorities to take immediate action against the attackers and ensure justice.

This incident has sparked outrage among locals and tourists, raising concerns about the safety and accountability of homestays in popular tourist destinations. Authorities are yet to issue a statement regarding the allegations of police inaction and the measures being taken to investigate the incident. Further developments in this case are awaited.
