Moscow – The Kremlin has denied reports of an alleged phone call between U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which Trump was said to have advised Putin against escalating the war in Ukraine. According to Al Jazeera, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov firmly labeled the reports as “pure fiction.”
Peskov addressed media inquiries on Monday, saying, “This is completely untrue. This is pure fiction; it’s just false information. There was no conversation.” He criticized the quality of information circulating in media, even from reputable publications, calling it inaccurate. When questioned about potential upcoming communication between Trump and Putin, Peskov clarified that “no concrete plans” were in place.
The Washington Post had reported on Sunday that Trump allegedly took a call from Putin while at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, advising the Russian leader not to escalate hostilities in Ukraine. Additionally, Trump was said to have reminded Putin of the significant U.S. military presence in Europe.
During his campaign, Trump pledged to find a solution to the Ukrainian conflict but did not specify his approach. The Washington Post’s sources suggested that Trump might support an agreement allowing Russia to retain control over certain territories captured during the conflict. The report also noted that Ukrainian officials were reportedly aware of the call but had no objections, anticipating that Trump would address the issue with Putin directly.
As tensions continue, the Kremlin’s denial adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing international discussion surrounding the war in Ukraine and Trump’s proposed approach to U.S.-Russia relations.
